Technology is a key factor of the direction as well as the magnitude of economic development. The purpose of Philip J. Vergragt in this paper is to foresee the contribution of technologies to a sustainable and equitable society. He roughs out the picture of forthcoming technological developments and their societal consequences. Then he focuses on the technological aspects of the Great Transition scenario and finally explores the possible pathways to this future.
