Prevalent institutional arrangements at any time are based on beliefs and values. This is why in this essay by Robert Kates, Anthony Leiserowitz, and Thomas Parris, values are vindicated as “both the ends and the means of the Great Transition.” To support their vision of a distant world where fulfillment has replaced wealth as the determinant of well-being, the authors start from today’s values and draw upon data found in multi-national surveys. They explain then why the desirable world they envision requires quality of life, human solidarity, and ecological sensibility as its core values. Their essay concludes with the driving forces that could allow the value struggle to lead us from here to there.
