Pierre-Noël Giraud

Pierre-Noël GIRAUD, born in 1949, is graduated from Ecole Polytechnique, Ecole des Mines and the University of Sorbonne. In 1978, he set up and headed the CERNA (Research centre in industrial economics) at ParisTech/Ecole des Mines de Paris. He is now professor of economics at ParisTech/Ecole des Mines. From 1984 to 2004, he was also associated professor at University Paris IX-Dauphine. Adviser to the French government and the European Commission in the fields of environmental and industrial policies, he is member of the French Academy of Technologies.

His research work has first dealt with the economics of commodities, in particular energy, and environmental economics, then with industrial economics. For more than ten years, he has also worked on the globalisation of firms and its macroeconomic and political consequences, as well as on industrialisation and urbanization in the emerging countries, particularly India.

He has written seven books and many articles. Among his last books: « Le Commerce des Promesses. Petit Traité sur la Finance Moderne » ( The Trade of Promises. Small Treaty on the Modern Finance ) (Seuil, 2001), which received three prizes: the Great Prize 2001 for the “best book in management and strategy” (sponsored by McKinsey), the “European Prize in Economics 2001” ( together with A. Sen), the “Turgot Prize 2002” for the best book in financial economics, and: «L’Inégalité du Monde.
