Sam Thompson joined nef in April 2006 as a Researcher/Consultant for New Economics Foundation’s centre for well-being.
Sam has a degree in music from Cambridge University, a masters in the psychology of music from Sheffield University and a PhD in psychology from Royal Holloway, University of London. He worked at the Royal College of Music (RCM) as a researcher and lecturer in psychology for five years, during which time he published widely in the area of psychology, music and subjective experience.
Since joining nef, Sam has worked on a number of projects, notably nef’s Happy Planet Index, an exploration of the relationships between sustainable development and well-being (for Defra), and a review of children and young people’s well-being and the environment (for the SDC). Sam’s research interests include the psychological dimensions underlying subjective well-being and the development of good indicators, well-being and sustainable behaviour, and the contribution of arts and culture to quality of life.
